Welcome to Captain Nickels Inn! Located in the heart of Maine’s stunning coastal region, our inn is the perfect home base for exploring the best that the area has to offer. What makes us truly unique is that we’re at the center of so many incredible destinations, allowing you to experience adventures in all directions without the hassle of changing accommodations.
From historic sites to breathtaking natural wonders, charming seaside towns, and unique cultural experiences, this itinerary highlights my personal recommendations for making the most of your Maine getaway. Whether you’re here for a week or longer, you’ll see why Captain Nickels Inn is the ideal starting point for unforgettable adventures.

Day 1: Dive into Local History
Start your Maine adventure at the Penobscot Marine Museum, where you can explore the fascinating world of the state’s maritime history. This treasure trove of exhibits dives deep into the seafaring culture that has shaped this region. It’s one of my favorite ways to connect with local history and get a feel for the area.
- Special Note: When you enter the First Congregational Church, look for the window dedicated to J. C. Nickels (brother to Albert Nickels). His home is located across the street from our inn and is one of the five historically significant homes that make up the East Main Historic District.
After soaking up all that history, take a stroll through Ellsworth, a charming small town filled with delightful shops and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot to grab a coffee, do some window shopping, or just enjoy the town’s relaxed vibe. A guest favorite dining spot is the Union River Lobster Pot for some of the best lobster & blueberry pie around.
Then, save the best for last— Schoodic Peninsula. This spot is an absolute gem and one of my top three must-dos! Schoodic is the quieter, more peaceful side of Acadia National Park, with breathtaking views, serene hiking trails, and plenty of perfect picnic spots. Be sure to grab your printed driving blog from the Inn to take with you for a truly unique day of discovering destinations only the locals know about. Whether you’re looking to explore or just relax, this hidden gem will win your heart.

Day 2: Coastal Highlights and a Lighthouse Adventure
Kick off your day with a walk out to the Breakwater Lighthouse, another one of my top three must-dos. The mile-long granite path feels like you’re walking on water, and the views of the coastline are simply breathtaking. It’s a must-do for lighthouse lovers!
- Special Note: On the walk out, there is only one piece of granite that spans the entire width. Let me know if you find it!
Next, head to Mount Battie at Camden Hills State Park. You can hike or drive to the top, where you’ll be greeted with one of the most stunning views in Maine. Trust me, it’s the perfect spot to sit, relax, and soak in the beauty of Camden from above. This is another of my top three must-dos.
For a beachside stop, pack a picnic and head to Lincolnville Beach. I’d recommend grabbing snacks and picnic essentials from Dots in Lincolnville before you go. Don’t forget to borrow a picnic blanket from Captain Nickels Inn!
End your day with a magical experience on the water aboard the Olad or Owl. This classic sailing adventure is an unforgettable way to enjoy Maine’s stunning coastline and fresh sea air.
With a mix of coastal views, serene beach time, and an iconic Maine sailing experience, day two is bound to be a highlight of your trip!

Day 3: Unique Experiences in Acadia National Park
Skip the usual tourist spots and explore Acadia National Park in a way that feels fresh and unique. Start your day by renting an e-bike and cruising along the peaceful carriage roads—it’s such a fun way to take in the scenery without the crowds. If biking isn’t your thing, hop on a horse-drawn carriage ride for a charming and nostalgic experience. When it’s time to refuel, elevate your picnic game with a luxury setup—perfect for soaking in the park’s stunning beauty while enjoying some delicious food.
Just a heads-up: be sure to book timed tickets for Cadillac Mountain and Thunder Hole in advance to secure your spot. Acadia offers so much to see, but these less-traveled experiences make the day truly special and memorable!

Day 4: Lobsters and Island Adventures
Day four is about lobsters and the coast. Start with a private lobster boat tour, where you’ll get hands-on experience pulling traps like a real lobsterman—it’s such a one-of-a-kind adventure and incredibly private. Next, head to Sears Island for a peaceful escape. Park on the causeway, walk past the gate, and explore the island’s beaches and historic farmhouse remains. It’s a hidden gem with a little something for everyone. Afterward, don’t miss the Narrows and Fort Knox, home to the tallest bridge observatory in the world. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and it’s an unexpected guest favorite! With a mix of hands-on fun, history, and incredible scenery, this day is sure to be one you’ll never forget.

Day 5: Stonington and Hidden Gems
Today is all about exploring some of Maine’s most unique and lesser-known treasures. Start your journey in Blue Hill, an artsy and eclectic little town that’s full of surprises. While most people don’t spend a lot of time here, it’s worth looking for something truly unique, whether it’s a quirky gallery, a boutique shop, or an unexpected craft experience. If you stay for dinner, I highly recommend Arborvine.
Next, make your way to Stonington, a charming lobstering town that offers a more authentic coastal vibe than the busier Bar Harbor. Along the way, you can stop at Castine if you’d like to explore another historic and picturesque town. Once you arrive in Stonington, be sure to visit Sand Beach—an unexpected gem. You’ll find this hidden treasure just off the roadside, where the forest meets a rocky shoreline and sandy beach. Pack a picnic and enjoy the tranquil setting, perfect for unwinding and soaking in the natural beauty of the area.
This day is all about discovering the road less traveled and experiencing the quieter, more authentic side of Maine. Trust me, you’ll fall in love with the charm and tranquility of these coastal gems!

Day 6: Coastal Adventures
For a truly unforgettable Maine experience, start the day with a whale and puffin tour. There’s nothing quite like spotting these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. If you’re up for some active exploration, rent a kayak in Searsport or Castine and paddle through serene coastal waters—it’s such a peaceful way to connect with nature. End the day on a relaxed note with a visit to a local craft brewery, like Maineport Brewery, where you can try their “Patty Mahoney” beer (named after the brewer’s mom—how sweet is that?). Whether you’re chasing wildlife or enjoying a laid-back evening, day six offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.

Day 7: Choose Your Adventure or Relax
Your last day is all about doing what feels right for you. If you’re feeling adventurous, spend the day exploring the shops and boutiques in Belfast or Searsport, or dive into the local arts and antiques scene. For a laid-back option, catch a movie at the Colonial Theater, take a leisurely stroll along the shore, or simply unwind. Of course, you can always enjoy your comfortable room at our inn, soaking in the peaceful ambiance and reflecting on all the memories you’ve made during your stay. Whether you’re out and about or relaxing close to home, day seven is the perfect way to end your Maine adventure on your terms.

Bonus Days: Extra Adventures
If you have extra time to extend your stay, why not take a day to explore even more of Maine’s incredible destinations? Here are some unforgettable options to add to your itinerary:
- Lubec & Campobello (North): Head two hours north to the charming town of Lubec and nearby Campobello Island, home to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, a unique site managed by both Canada and the United States. The park features the Roosevelt family’s summer home, open 20 weeks out of the year, where you can step back in time and experience what life was like for the president and his family in the 1920s. Admission is free, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Campobello Island is located in the province of New Brunswick, Canada, and if traveling via the FDR International Bridge from Lubec, Maine, you’ll need to cross Canada Customs on the bridge. On your return to the United States, you’ll pass through U.S. Customs. This trip is perfect for history buffs and those who love quiet, scenic getaways.
- Freeport & Portland (South): Just two hours south, you’ll find the best of Maine’s shopping and dining scene. Freeport is home to the iconic L.L. Bean flagship store, while Portland boasts award-winning restaurants, charming cobblestone streets, and a lively waterfront vibe.
- Island Adventures: For a truly unique Maine experience, hop on a ferry to explore one of the state’s small islands. Options include Vinalhaven, Cranberry Island, Monhegan, or Isle Au Haut. Each offers its own special charm, whether you’re looking for scenic hikes, quaint fishing villages, or a peaceful escape surrounded by stunning coastal beauty.
